World Cup Stadium and nearby development

The Associated Press reported on a stadium that was built on the last rare wildlife habitat in Kaliningrad, Russia in preparation for the 2018 World Cup.  According to The Weather Channel, "'The whole district where the stadium stands and all the houses around it, literally six or seven years ago there was a marsh here,' Russia’s Minister of Special Programs Alexei Merkushkin told the AP."

It is clear from imagery collected throughout the construction process that the stadium had an impact on the environment and local development.  There was significant redevelopment in the nearby neighborhoods, but they were certainly constructed and in use long before the stadium construction.
