EPA relaxes coal ash waste standards

The Trump administration weakened consumer protections for toxic coal ash waste management on Tues., July 19. In Andrew Wheeler's first major action as acting administrator of the EPA, he relaxed protection standards for groundwater and drinking water and extended the deadline to close leaking ash ponds and ash ponds within five feet of groundwater. This regulatory change will impact over 400 coal-based power plants, including the Dominion Energy Power Station in Chester, VA, located next to the Dutch Gap Conservation Area.
